The tropical Bucida buceras 'Shady Lady' excels with its native appearance in office buildings but is also certainly a wonderful addition to entrance areas and living rooms. This versatile beauty is therefore highly cherished by architects and interior landscapers.

Origin

The Bucida buceras 'Shady Lady' originates from the tropical climates of Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and the northern part of South America. This tree, also known as the Black Olive Tree, is loved for its robust wood. This wood is particularly hard and very resistant to fungi and insects. A Bucida can grow to about 15 to 20 metres high. The tree grows quite slowly. The leaves of Bucida are shiny green and are about 5 to 10 centimetres long.

Care

Location

The Bucida buceras 'Shady Lady' thrives best in a place with quite a bit of sunlight. However, the plant can also stand in a place with some shade. It is best placed 2 or 3 metres in front of an east or west-facing window and 3 to 4 metres in front of a south-facing window. If a Bucida stands too dark, its growth will stop. In the right location, the Bucida grows slowly but remains green all year round.

Watering

The Bucida buceras 'Shady Lady' appreciates regular watering. It is important that the soil in which the plant is placed is well-draining. Be careful that excess water can run off to prevent root rot. The Bucida indicates when it gets too little water: then the leaves fall off. Ensure the soil is always slightly moist. In the growing season, this means a slightly higher frequency of watering than in the autumn and winter months.

Spraying and temperature

The Bucida buceras 'Shady Lady' loves high humidity and therefore needs to be sprayed regularly, especially on warm days. In addition, the plant requires a fairly high temperature. The minimum temperature for the Bucida is around 15 °C, but the most ideal temperature for the tree is about 24 to 28 °C.

Pruning

The slow-growing Bucida buceras 'Shady Lady' will not need much pruning. However, you can trim the longest shoots to maintain the beautiful shape and to prevent the tree from becoming too heavy on top. You can also remove any dry leaves. Preferably prune in the spring when the tree is not yet actively growing.

Nutrition

Extra feeding in the spring and summer months will certainly be appreciated by the Bucida buceras and promote the preservation of the tree.
