The Cycas revoluta is a fascinating plant with a remarkable growth process. This special plant, also known as the Sago Palm, gives every indoor and outdoor space a tropical appearance. Discover the Cycas revoluta and read more about its origin, features, and care of this stunning plant.

Origin

The Cycas revoluta, also known as the Sago Palm, is originally from Japan. The plant belongs to the group Cycadales, the cycads. This is a species that is very old and already existed in the era of the dinosaurs. The Cycas revoluta is sometimes called a 'false palm'. In terms of appearance, the plant is very much like a palm tree, but does not belong to the palm family Arecaceae.

Features

The Cycas revoluta is a relatively small plant that grows slowly. The Cycas can grow up to about 2 metres high and 1.5 metres wide. What is special about this plant is the way the leaves grow. On top of the thick stem, the characteristic large, feather-shaped leaves grow in a circular pattern. They form a large rosette. New leaves emerge as light green shoots that form a circle around the stem. The leaves slowly unroll when they are fully grown and form a new leaf rosette.

Care

Location

The Sago Palm can be placed in many places both indoors and outdoors. The plant does not tolerate frost well and should be brought indoors in colder climates when the temperature drops below 0. Indoors, the Cycas revoluta is best in partial shade, for example near an east-facing window. When located outdoors, it is important to slowly acclimate the Sago Palm to sunlight. When the palm goes back outside in the spring, it should initially be placed in a shady spot. Allow the Cycas to gradually get used to more sunlight over a few weeks. After this, the plant can do well in a sunny spot.

Watering

The Cycas revoluta is quite drought tolerant. When the plant is in a pot, it is preferable to allow the soil to completely dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it is important to monitor watering. When the plant is in the ground, the water requirement may decrease as the plant gets older.

Spraying

The Cycas revoluta enjoys a humid environment. It is recommended to mist the leaves regularly, especially during warm and dry periods. This removes dust and increases the humidity around the plant.

Temperature

The best temperature for the Cycas revoluta is around 20 °C, but the plant can survive colder temperatures down to about -5 °C. When the plant is outdoors, it should be moved indoors at temperatures below -5 degrees.

Pruning

The Cycas revoluta grows slowly and pruning is usually not necessary. Brown or dead leaves can be removed. They can be cut off close to the stem.

Feeding

In the spring, it is recommended to feed the Cycas. Use a fertiliser for houseplants or palms. Fertiliser promotes flowering and maintains the beautiful colour of the plant. Check the packaging for the correct amounts.
