Origin
The Cordyline Australis 'Red Star', also known as the New Zealand cabbage palm, originates from New Zealand. The plant is recognised for its exotic look and is a popular ornamental plant in mild climates all over the world. Due to its origin, the Red Star can survive well in coastal areas with high salt concentrations and in icy mountain regions.

Characteristics
Characteristics of the Cordyline Australis 'Red Star' include the dark red, sword-shaped leaves that grow in a bunch from the stem. This tree-like perennial can reach a height of up to fifteen meters, but usually remains smaller when grown in planters. The Red Star produces clusters of white, star-shaped flowers in the late spring or early summer, followed by blue-black berries.

Care
In terms of care, the Red Star requires a sunny, sheltered spot with well-draining soil. The plant should be watered regularly during dry periods, but less in the winter. Young plants need protection against frost, but established specimens are surprisingly hardy. If necessary, the plant can be pruned in the early spring to control the shape and promote healthy growth.
