The Spathiphyllum, better known as the Peace Lily, is striking with its large green leaves and white flowers. This flowering plant is easy to care for and is highly air-purifying, making the Peace Lily an ideal plant for creating a healthy (office) environment.
The Spathiphyllum originates from the tropical rainforests of the Amazon region, for example in Colombia and Venezuela, and belongs to the Araceae family. The Spathiphyllum is also known as the Peace Lily, due to its symbolism for peace and purity. This Peace Lily is one of the most air-purifying plants in the world because its leaves convert COâ‚‚ into oxygen.
The Peace Lily has few requirements for its location but cannot tolerate direct sunlight. Therefore, do not place the plant directly by a south-facing window. The ideal location for the Spathiphyllum is in front of a north-facing window or a few metres from an east or west-facing window. The Peace Lily indicates if it is positioned too brightly or too darkly: yellow leaves suggest too much sunlight, green flowers indicate too dark a location.
The Spathiphyllum consumes a lot of water and prefers to be in slightly moist soil continuously. Therefore, water the Peace Lily about twice a week during the warmer spring and summer months. The plant shows it needs more water when its leaves start to droop. This is a sign that the frequency of watering needs to be increased.
Due to its origin in the Amazon region, the Spathiphyllum enjoys high humidity. Misting enhances the health of the plant and also encourages the production of more flowers. The ideal temperature for the Spathiphyllum is between 18°C and 24°C. Do not place the Peace Lily near drafty windows or heating elements.
When the Peace Lily has brown or yellow leaves, it is best to cut them off as close to the base as possible. After flowering, the flower stems can also be removed to encourage new flower growth.
In the growing season, during the spring and summer months, the Spathiphyllum can be fertilised with universal liquid plant food. Do not feed during autumn and winter; the plant is in a resting phase then.
There are about 40 different types of Spathiphyllum, varying in size and colour. The Spathiphyllum 'Sensation' is the largest variety and is known for its dark green, large leaves. The Spathiphyllum 'Diamond' is a smaller variety and features beautiful white variegation in the leaves.
