It is impossible to imagine a modern garden or a trendy balcony or terrace without the olive tree. The Olea europaea is a beautiful tree that gives the outdoor area a Mediterranean touch. Want to know all about the origins of this plant and how to look after it? Then read on!
The Olea europaea, or olive tree, originates from the Mediterranean region. The history of this tree goes back centuries; the Olea was already cultivated by the ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. The olive tree has an important symbolic value in these cultures and is often associated with peace, wisdom and fertility.
Today, the Olea europaea is spread worldwide and different varieties of the tree have emerged. For example, there are trees that are more resistant to cold and frost than other varieties. Different varieties of olives are also grown, all of which have their own unique flavour and texture.
For the Olea europaea to grow and flower optimally, it is important to place it in the right position. This plant likes a lot of sunlight and warmth. So place the olive tree in a spot where it gets at least 6 hours of sunlight a day.
Although the Olea europaea naturally grows in a dry and warm climate, it is still important to water it regularly. Especially in the hot summer months, this plant can lose a lot of moisture and dry out. So water the tree regularly, but make sure the soil does not get too wet. This is because Olea europaea does not like wet feet; as a result, the plant can quickly suffer from root rot. It is therefore better to water small amounts regularly, e.g. two to three times a week, rather than a large amount once a week. If the leaves of the olive tree turn brown or yellow, the plant is getting too much water.
The olive tree grows naturally in the dry Mediterranean climate and therefore does not need to be watered. In fact, in summer, watering can be harmful, as the water droplets can cause the leaves to burn. The Olea will grow best in a warm environment and in summer, at the right temperature, the tree will also bear fruit. However, the tree can also withstand some colder temperatures just fine. Here, the tree will survive an occasional night frost well, but at temperatures below -5 degrees or prolonged exposure to cold, it is advisable to protect the tree.
To keep the Olea europaea beautiful and healthy, it is important to prune it regularly. It is best to do this in spring, before the tree starts growing again. Prune away the branches that grow inwards, so that the tree keeps a nice shape and sufficient light can reach the centre of the plant. You can also prune away any dead branches so that the tree can use all its energy to grow new branches and leaves.
Although it is not necessary, you can provide the Olea europaea with nutrition to keep the plant healthy and strong. To do this, use a special food for olive trees or Mediterranean plants. Give the plant this food about once a month in spring and summer. Be careful not to overfeed, as this may harm the plant.
