Origin
The Ilex crenata 'Fastigiata', also known as Japanese holly, is originally from Japan and Korea. This fast-growing shrub is primarily used in landscape architecture and ornamental gardens due to its visual range of hues and structures. In Japanese culture, the leaves and branches of this evergreen shrub are often used in traditional Shinto rituals and decorations.

Characteristics
The Ilex crenata 'Fastigiata' grows in columns with narrow, oval leaves. These dark green, glossy leaves are characteristic of the species and lend colour to the garden all year round. The small white flowers are produced on the shrub in the spring and are often followed by small, black berries in the autumn and winter.

Care
Caring for the Ilex crenata 'Fastigiata' is relatively simple. This shrub enjoys sunny to semi-shaded locations and a well-draining, acid to neutral soil. It is resistant to cold temperatures and is also remarkably resilient to drought and urban pollution. The plant should be watered regularly and fertilised at least once a year, preferably before summer, with a slow-release fertiliser. The plant is also suitable for pruning, particularly topiary work.
