Stunning foliage in a range of colours: the Acer is a marvellous sight. This ancient plant, also known as the maple, is popular in outdoor planting. Explore our diverse range and learn more about caring for this beauty.
The Acer (maple) originates from the northern hemisphere, especially in Asia and North America. The Acer genus is millions of years old. Throughout history, the plant has been able to adapt to various climates and environments, making it very robust. This makes the maple a favoured plant in outdoor planting.
The best spot for an Acer is one with partial shade, preferably a bit sheltered. The maple can also be placed in a sunnier spot; here, varieties with larger leaves are better suited to direct sunlight. Place the maple in well-draining soil that is ideally slightly acidic and rich in humus. The Acer can also be placed in a pot. Water the Acer regularly during the summer months, but not too much. The Acer loses its leaves in winter and in spring, the beautifully coloured foliage grows back. The Acer is hardy in the ground down to about -20°C.
The Acer is a genus of plants that has a lot of variety. There are maples in tree form and in shrub form. The Acer's leaves are known for having the shape of a hand. In our extensive range of maples, you will find various types, each with a unique appearance. One of the most famous species is the Acer palmatum, also called the Japanese maple. Within this species, there are countless different cultivars, each with its own colour variety and leaf shape. For example, the Acer palmatum ‘Fire Glow’ has deep purple-red coloured leaves, and the Acer Palmatum ‘Dissectum Viridis’ has fresh green and deeply cut leaves. Also, the Acer griseum (paperbark maple) is a well-known species, known for its peeling bark that has a brown-copper colour.
